Early, before the sun is high
I curl up tightly in the blankets over me,
Outside the ocean wakes the morning tides,
And sea-birds spread their wings for this final flight,
This time, time has caught up with me,
It’s time, time for me to leave.
Passing the children on their way to school,
Surfers dance like ballerinas on the gentle waves,
Winding, these road are made of my dreams,
Burning, my lungs scream at the cars and gasoline.
This day was waiting all along to come, To stay still would only undo what is done, I weigh out my options, should I walk or run,
Either way I’ll ride toward the sun,
In this final flight.
Memories they have a tendency to fade,
Close my eyes and picture all the places, and the friends I’ve made,
Wondering what would have happened had I stayed,
Questions would still be unanswered and I’d be in the shade.
So I’m alone on this highway like a bird flying south, But I’m home where perspective has been turned inside out,
This road has shown me there is never reason to doubt,
Even though it’s nearly over now, In this final flight.
In this final flight tears flow into the sea,
Crashing to my right waves roll and all I hear
Is the wind beneath my wheels, Just imagine how it feels, When your destination nears, The horizon disappears.
In this final flight I see all the colours of the rainbow washing over me,
The sand yellow and white,
The ocean emerald green, And that roller-coaster right ahead is redder than I’ve seen. I can smell the candy corn,
See those people passing by, They are on a journey too,
Every person, you and I,
A kaleidoscopic view,
Where the land and sea collide,
In this final flight.
